Evidence-based support for success in reading and spelling.

Pinpoint Learning Clinic provides a psychologist-supervised reading intervention for learners and families in Hamilton, Burlington, Halton, and all of Southern-Ontario. We offer a clear, effective, and research-based path toward accurate and confident reading.

Our Approach

Instruction at Pinpoint is systematic, explicit, and cumulative, building a solid foundation for literacy.

Instruction

We provide direct, targeted instruction to build the skills needed to sound out words accurately and read connected text with greater accuracy and ease.

Phonemic Awareness

Proficiency in reading requires the ability to hear and manipulate the smallest sounds in words. Our program systematically develops this critical, foundational skill.

Building Academic Confidence

As skills improve, a student’s self-esteem often grows. We work to reduce reading-related anxiety and foster a greater sense of capability in academic settings.

The Pinpoint Approach

  • Our program begins with a comprehensive assessment, helping establish a baseline for each student’s literacy skills.
  • We use advanced analytics from our assessment to ensure we pinpoint the exact learning needs and tailor and instructional program to each student’s learning needs.
  • Pinpoint uses a research-informed Science of Reading intervention program called EMBRS Reading. To read more about this program, go to embrsreading.com
  • Direct 1:1 instruction tailored to the specific learning needs of each individual student.
  • Optional family-inclusion sessions allow for parents and caregivers to learn an approach that will reinforce the skills at home.
  • Regular transparent progress monitoring that ensures both the student and family are aware of the impact the intervention.

Common Questions

We provide reading intervention for learners aged 5 and older. Our programs are adaptable to meet the developmental needs of young children just beginning their literacy journey, as well as school-aged students, teenagers, and adults who are looking to build foundational reading and spelling skills.

Every student’s timeline is unique. The total time required is based on their specific needs, how often they have sessions, and regular practice. We aim to develop their skills to a level where they are reading at Benchmark for their grade level. Parents are kept up to date on all progress that is made – from the small wins, to the large leaps.

Practice is an essential part of learning and reinforcing any new skill. Pinpoint students use the EMBRS Reading App at home (available for laptop or tablet) to practice skills covered in session.

Our approach is tailored to be inclusive of all students, regardless of whether or not there is a diagnosis. Whether your child has been diagnosed with dyslexia, or is just not reading and spelling as expected, Pinpoint welcomes all.
